September is  “National Cholesterol Education Month

The “Medical View”- by Dr. Anahita Kaul

High cholesterol usually has no signs or symptoms and is a serious condition that can increase your risk for heart disease.

This is why it is important to know your individual risk factors and get your cholesterol checked regularly.

You can do many things to improve your cholesterol levels and keep them in a healthy range!

  • Get your cholesterol tested as advised by your Doctor
  • Make healthy food choices: Limit foods high in saturated fats and select foods naturally high in fiber content
  • Be physically active every day.
  • Don’t smoke: Smoking damages your blood vessels and accelerates  the hardening of your arteries and greatly increases your risk for heart disease.
  • Talk with your doctor about ways to manage your cholesterol; whether via diet and lifestyle changes or if any medicines are needed to manage your cholesterol.
  • Know your family history. If your parents or other immediate family members have high cholesterol, you probably should be tested more often.
